Getting to School

Safe Routes to School Maps

School route maps are in development. Look for them here in October 2026.

The maps will show suggested walking and biking routes within each school’s attendance area. They will include estimated travel times and features such as crosswalks, traffic signals, stop signs, crossing guards and bike lanes. 

These maps are for informational purposes only. Routes shown are not guaranteed to be the safest or most appropriate for every student. Conditions may change at any time. Families are responsible for evaluating routes based on current conditions, their child's individual needs, and applicable traffic laws.

Biking to School

Our Bicycle Level of Traffic Stress (BLTS) map can help families choose routes that feel safer and more comfortable for biking.

The map shows factors that affect riding comfort, including traffic speed, number of travel lanes, bike facilities and challenging crossings.

School Crossing Guards

We provide 48 crossing guard services at 47 intersections. They serve 18 schools throughout Sunnyvale. Crossing guards are on duty one hour before and after school to help students travel safely.

Crossing Guard Locations

Public Works uses an analysis to decide where crossing guards are needed, and reviews these locations every two years. They plan the next citywide review for fall 2026. Crossing Guards are funded by Public Safety through contracts with All City Management Services.

While public funding for our crossing guard program is dedicated to public schools, we remain fully committed to working closely with private schools to help them develop and support their own crossing guard programs. Ensuring a safe and secure environment for every person in our community is the foundation of everything we do.

Get Involved

Get involved through the following opportunities:

• Middle School Assemblies – Starting in fall 2026, we will partner with Bike Mobile to provide safety education and free bicycle repair services. Bicycle safety assemblies will be held at Columbia, Cupertino, Peterson, and Sunnyvale middle schools.
• Bike Rodeos – Hands-on events that help children build bicycle handling and safety skills.
• Pedestrian Rodeos – Activities that teach children how to walk safely and confidently near traffic.
• Walk and Bike to School Days – Community events that encourage students to walk or bike to school and learn safe travel habits.
• Middle School Bike Skills Workshops – Free summer workshops that teach students and parents or guardians bicycle safety through hands-on training.
