Climate Action Goals

The City of Sunnyvale cares about our planet and is taking action to fight climate change. Our Climate Action Playbook (Playbook) is a guide that shows how we plan to reduce pollution and create a greener, healthier Sunnyvale. The Playbook is created by and for the community, drawing on more than 400 ideas.

What’s in the Playbook?

Just like a coach’s playbook helps a team win the game, our Playbook lays out winning strategies to reduce emissions:

• 56% below 1990 levels by 2030
• 85% below 1990 levels by 2045 (aligns with the state’s target)

From Ideas to Six Strategies

Community ideas inspired the Playbook’s six core Strategies:

• Promoting clean electricity
• Decarbonizing buildings¹
• Decarbonizing transportation and sustainable land use²
• Managing resources sustainably
• Empowering our community
• Adapting to a changing climate

1. Decarbonizing means reducing and ultimately eliminating carbon (greenhouse gas) emissions.
2. Sustainable land use means planning our land so it’s easier to walk, bike and use electric vehicles.

Each Strategy includes:

• Plays – areas for action with clear targets
• Moves – specific actions we can take together

Game Plan 2028

Game Plan 2028 is our next five-year plan. It outlines the most important "Next Moves" we’ll work on from 2024 to 2028.

We’ll update the Game Plan every five years as we learn more, new technology becomes available and new laws are passed. While it’s hard to imagine all the right Moves today, the Playbook is a clear plan. We’re set up for success and getting the ball rolling towards our goals!
