The City is putting money and effort into programs to help people without homes. These services include supportive housing, emergency shelters and temporary housing. We ask residents to stay informed, support these efforts and share concerns through the right channels so we can respond in a caring and effective way.

Current City Initiatives

We partner with local organizations and service providers to connect people to shelter, health care and housing. Some of our current programs include:

• Inclement Weather Hotel Pilot Program: Provides temporary hotel stays during severe weather.
• Street Outreach: Offers daily outreach with case management, health service connections, housing resources and shelter assessments.
• Dignity on Wheels: Delivers mobile hygiene services like restrooms, showers, laundry and case management.
• Temporary Hotel Shelter Program: Offers up to 30-day hotel stays for unhoused Sunnyvale residents engaged with WeHOPE.
• Affordable Housing: Funds nonprofit developers to build affordable rental housing. See affordable housing options.
• Affordable Rental Programs: Reserves some new rental homes at below-market rates for lower-income households. Learn more about our rental programs.

The PIT Count is a count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that Continuums of Care conduct the count annually for sheltered people and every other year for unsheltered people. The data from the count is used to determine federal funding allocations and to create national estimates of homelessness.

In Sunnyvale, the 2025 PIT Count found 421 people experiencing homelessness. This is an 11% decrease from the 2023 count. The majority of people counted were living in vehicles (75%), while 25% were living outdoors.
