Asian Americans and other minority groups have played an important role in shaping Sunnyvale. This project studies their contributions so they receive recognition in an updated Statement.

Project Timeline

Spring 2026
- Public draft of the updated Statement available for comment.
- Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) and City Council public hearings for final adoption.
Winter 2025-spring 2026 – Consultant performing research, drafting updated Statement and conducting oral histories.
Dec. 11, 2025 – Community meeting
Nov. 5, 2025 – Public hearing presentation to HPC to receive direction on the study.
June 2025 – Project kick-off

BACKGROUND

City Council adopted Sunnyvale’s Historical Context Statement on Oct. 16, 2012. The Statement guides the City’s heritage preservation work. It explains Sunnyvale’s history through:

Architecture and land use
Important events
Industry
Notable people and community groups

The Heritage Preservation Commission started this study. Their goal is to learn how Asian Americans and other minority groups shaped Sunnyvale. In 2023, City Council funded the project. We hired Architectural Resources Group to lead the project.

The goals of this study are to:

Update the Statement to include these contributions
Find places and buildings linked to this history
Create a final document that celebrates Sunnyvale’s diverse community
