Evelyn Multi-use Trail

The Evelyn Avenue Multi-use Trail project will build a Class I shared-use path along the north side of West Evelyn Avenue. It will stretch from South Bernardo Avenue at the Mountain View/Sunnyvale city limit to Mathilda Place in Sunnyvale. This new Class I path will be a fully separated, paved path for both people walking and biking. This new Class I path will be separated from cars and open to people walking, biking, or using other active ways to travel. It will run along this important east-west route

The project will also improve access to nearby bike and pedestrian networks. It will improve connections at Bernardo Avenue, Mary Avenue, Sunset Avenue, Pastoria Avenue, Florence Street and the southbound Mathilda Avenue loop ramp.

PROGRESS

Current Status

The project is currently under review by Caltrain and California Public Utilities Commission. The final design should be completed by fall 2025.

Report to Council 24-0098, Jan. 9, 2024 – Award of a contract to BKF Engineers for the design and construction support services for Evelyn Avenue Multi-Use Trail Project and find the project is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to CEQA guidelines section 15378(a).

Report to Council 21-1032, Dec. 14, 2021 – Adopt a resolution authorize filing of application for state specified grant program funds for Evelyn Avenue Multi-Use Trail Project.

BACKGROUND

Evelyn Avenue is a two-lane road just south of the Caltrain tracks with a speed limit of 35 mph. The street includes on-street Class II bike lanes (painted lanes for bicycles), on-street parking, and either a center turn lane or a median. A sidewalk is only on the south side of the street, from west of Florence Street to the city’s western limits.

In 2020, the City’s Active Transportation Plan identified Evelyn Avenue as a priority for improving bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The plan recommended building a two-way Class IV separated bikeway (a bike path protected from vehicle traffic by curbs, posts, or other barriers) on the north side of the street between Bernardo Avenue and Mathilda Place.
