Issue Title:

Installation of a Radio Transmitter to Broadcast Traffic Reports in Sunnyvale

Lead Department:

Office of the City Manager

General Plan Element or Sub-Element: Land Use and Transportation

1.

What are the key elements of the issue? What precipitated it?

Traffic is a major issue facing Sunnyvale and the entire region. To help mitigate traffic congestion, this issue would investigate the feasibility of installing a low-to medium power AM radio transmitter that would broadcast updates on traffic patterns to drivers in Sunnyvale. Such updates could include major planned road closures and construction areas as well as reports on major accidents. At least one other California city has installed such a system. The study would look at that experience and the pro’s and con’s of implementing a similar system in Sunnyvale.

2.

How does this relate to the General Plan or existing City Policy?

LUTE Goal C3: Attain a transportation system that is effective, safe, pleasant and convenient.
