SUBJECT: 1999 PHASE I BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS APPOINTMENTS

REPORT IN BRIEF

On June 7 and 9, 1999, Council interviewed applicants for the vacancies on the City Boards and Commissions. Staff recommends Council make its appointments from the applicants listed below.

BACKGROUND

Spring recruitment for citizens interested in serving on a City Board or Commission was conducted from March 1 through May 14, 1999. Approximately more than 100 applications were distributed to prospective candidates. Twenty-nine eligible applications were received; one candidate withdrew his applications for two commissions. Council Legislative Policy 7.2.5. "Selection Process" indicates that all persons seeking membership to a board or commission shall be subject to interview, selection and appointment by the City Council.

Publication of Council agenda in the San Jose Mercury News and notification to all applicants.

ALTERNATIVES

  1. Make appointments from the candidates listed above. Should vacancies remain, direct staff to include them in a Fall recruitment effort to begin in September, with appointments in December. Phase II recruitment schedule attached.
  2. Do not make appointments at this time.

RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends alternative #1.
